Buying a new monitor doesn’t always have to be expensive. In recent years prices for quality high definition monitors have gone down as the popularity of larger monitors has increased and production costs of these monitors have decreased. In this post we’ll review the ten bestselling LED/LCD computer monitors under $200 for 2013. The order is determined by taking overall popularity, customer reviews, and the author’s personal opinion into perspective.
LED Vs. LCD
Traditional LCD monitors or “liquid crystal displays” use fluorescent lighting which does a good job as a backlight for your monitor but contains environmentally harmful mercury and is up to 50% less energy efficient than the more modern LED backlit monitors. Despite this more efficient technology fluorescent lit LCD monitors still dominated the market up until recently because of the price differential between the two. Now that LED backlit LCD monitors have come down in price overall they have started to replace the older fluorescent LCD models in the top ten.

1.) Viewsonic – VX2450WM-LED and VX2250WM-LED Series Review
Viewsonic has dominated the market in recent years by releasing quality products at a price level that is $20-30 lower than its competitors. Per Amazon, the two bestselling monitors of the year belong to Viewsonic’s “WM-LED Series” which includes the 24 inch VX2450WM-LED and the 22 inch VX2250WM-LED.
Like most large monitors in 2013 these have full high definition resolution (1920x1080p). What really sets them apart is their contrast ratios. Contrast ratio measures color on a monitor from the blackest black to the whitest white. The 24 inch version has a mega dynamic contrast ratio of 20,000,000:1 and the 22 inch version, 10,000,000:1. Beyond what seems like a good “number” Viewsonic has improved their LED technology by giving their LED lights the ability to completely turn off in order to create a more realistic black. A 5ms response time will keep action scenes smooth during movies, but may not be sufficient for gaming. Viewsonic’s VX2453MH-LED (also under $200) and it’s larger version the VX2753MH-LED were designed with gaming monitor specifications in mind having 2ms and 1ms response times respectively. If you’re looking for a gaming or performance enthusiast monitor see our review of the best gaming monitors.
The color is accurate for a TN (twisted nematic) type panel and perfect for home or office use, however; if you’re a graphic designer, then it might be a beneficial to take a look at our list of the best IPS (in-plane switching) monitors for photo editing for additional color accuracy.
The integrated speakers on these monitors are pretty standard. They definitely won’t blow you away, but they are convenient for browsing and create a lot of space on your desktop. If you listen to a lot of music or like to play games on your computer, then you might want to consider purchasing some decent PC speakers or a pair of headphones to go along with this monitor.
Both of these models come with a standard analog VGA connector as well as a DVI connector for diverse connectivity options. If you need an HDMI port, then you may want to consider a DVI to HDMI cable or another monitor that comes with an HDMI out.
A lot of monitor manufacturers, including Viewsonic in some cases, skimp by leaving out the mounting holes on the back of their monitors. A nice feature for these models is that they both include 100mm x 100mm VESA compliant holes for wall mount or monitor stands.
Viewonic uses one of the highest grade panels in the industry and they back it up with one of the industry’s best warranties, a 3 year parts and labor warranty with Viewsonic’s “Pixel Performance Guarantee”. If you ever have a problem with a monitor, then it’s also nice that Viewsonic provides 24/7 online service and customer support.
